The Solution For Local Fishermen

12 February 2019

KCU have been working in partnership with Fishing Animature to help local fishermen break the cycle and access funds to improve their work, and in turn, their income. Grant funds are available for fishermen from the MMO, however, for the fishermen to access this grant money they must first spend the money and then claim it back. KCU offer loans to those who have been preapproved for a grant but do not have the funds to make the necessary purchases in the first place. Once the grant money is received, the fishermen then pay back their loan to the credit union.
KCU have given out £59,800 since December 2018 and have received a large majority of this back with the rest due in the next few months (and, to date, have no bad debt!). It is a condition that all Fishermen wanting to use this service become members of the KCU. Some use the KCU for other loan services for boat insurance, business building etc that is not covered by the scheme.

Shares no longer covered by Death Benefit Trust as of 1st October 2018

20 June 2018

Kernow Credit Union has opted out of the Death Benefit Trust on shares. From 01.10.2018 members will no longer receive Death Benefit Trust (DBT) pay-outs in relation to their shares held with us.However, loans will continue to be covered by a separate insurance policy (as per the terms of the DBT).The decision to opt out of the Death Benefit Trust's cover of shares was an agenda item at our recent AGM held on 6th February 2018. The matter was discussed at length by the members present and the motion was voted on and passed. This means that members' Loans will be covered by the policy after the member's death, thereby relieving the burden on their families, but their shares will not be covered by the DBT.Members' beneficiaries will still receive the full value of the shares (subject to any adjustment in relation to loan arrears). We realise this may come as a disappointment to some members, however, remaining with the DBT shares option was not sustainable to the Credit Union in the long term.
